Not only skilled in the clinical realm, Dr. Shamess has been active in Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine research and education. 

Dr. Shamess has mentored, taught and lectured fellows in training and has spoken at various conferences regarding preventative pain management options, new advances in pain management and sports medicine.  

Dr. Shamess regularly attends sports medicine, preventative medicine and orthopaedic medicine conferences and symposia in order to keep abreast of the latest scientific findings, technologies and trends in his field.

Meet Dr. Brian Shamess, 

Sault Ste. Marie Sports Medicine Physician

Dr. Brian Shamess has been practicing in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine for over 30 years. He is currently the Director of Algoma Sports Medicine and Physical Injuries Clinic in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Dr. Shamess has a lifelong passion for sports medicine, orthopaedic medicine, preventative medicine and pain management medicine. 

Dr. Shamess was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, where he developed a keen interest in giving back to the Northern Ontario community from a very young age. 

As a deeply committed athlete who competed in Track and Field, Cross Country and Hockey, Dr. Shamess became extremely enthusiastic about sports medicine. In 1971, Dr. Shamess was an Ontario Provincial Champion in the 800-meter race. At Western University, he was a member of the Canadian Cross-Country Championship team in the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) and placed in the top 4 at the Canadian Cross-Country Championships in 1976. Dr. Shamess was also named one of thirteen all-Canadians in Cross-Country. Dr. Shamess was recently inducted into the Western University Track and Field Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the OUAA indoor Track and Field Championship team in 1974.  

Dr. Shamess specializes in Sports and Orthopaedic medicine, pain management and personal injuries. Dr. Shamess is certified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and is licensed to practice in Ontario. Dr. Shamess received a Michigan Board of Medicine license as a Physician and Surgeon, however does not have an active practice in Michigan.  

Education and Experience

Dr. Brian Shamess attended his undergraduate studies at Western University in London, Ontario. Dr. Shamess graduated from Western University, Schulich School of Medicine over 35 years ago. He completed a two-year Sports Medicine Fellowship at Western University (J.C. Kennedy Sports Injuries Clinic) under the direction of Dr. Peter Fowler, an internationally renowned orthopedic surgeon and a pioneer in the treatment of sports-related injuries. 

Dr. Shamess has completed medical training all over the world including in the Guang An Men Hospital in Beijing, China where he trained in Tuinology and Acupuncture under the direction of the North American Academy of Musculoskeletal Medicine. Dr. Shamess also trained at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri and at the Wilderman Medical Clinic in Toronto, Ontario where he specialized in Pain Management.

  • Medical Officer for Canadian National Cross Country Ski Team on the World Circuit in Eastern and Western Europe in 1984 and 1988
  • Medical Officer for the Canadian Olympic Cross-Country Ski Team from 1984 to 1992
  • Team Physician for Sault Greyhounds Hockey Team from 1985 to 2001
  • Member of Medical Support Team for the Canadian Triathlon Championships in 1991
  • Chief Medical Officer for the Canadian Paralympic World Track and Field Championships in Berlin, Germany in 1994
  • Chief Medical Officer for the Canadian Under 18 National Hockey Team at the World Championships in 1998 
  • Chief Medical Officer for Canada’s National Junior Hockey Team at the World Championships in 1999
  • Medical Consultant for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2004
  • Canadian Medical Representative at the World Meeting of the Federation International Manual Medicine in Elche, Spain in 2019.
